This post is completely my opinion, and does not contain affiliate links. I was in now way discounted or reimbursed for reviewing the items below. Hey everyone! I'm finally getting around to showing you all the art supplies that I ordered from Dick Blick about a month ago. Dick Blick has some really great prices, so I was able to get a bunch of stuff for way less than if I'd bought it at Hobby Lobby, Micheal's, or even Guiry's art supply store. Quite a lot of stuff, huh? Let's take a look at the drawing pencils and blending stumps, first.

I've never done much with watercolor paints, but I do have a nice assortment of watercolor brushes and paints. My oil paint has been having trouble drying because of the cold weather lately, so I've recently been experimenting with watercolors.
One of the earlier projects that I did was this still life painting. The large set up of still life objects for this project was similar to the set up for the glazing project, insomuch as there was a large variety of various objects with fabric backgrounds. One big difference, however, was that all of these objects were white and the fabrics were solid colors.
At the same time that I was painting my glazed still life, I also painted this copy of André Derain's Big Ben. André Derain was one of the leaders of the fauvism movement back in the early 1900's. The fauvists expressed themselves by using often bright and unusual colors in their paintings. This movement was fairly small and short lived, but it did produce some cool art. One of the interesting things about fauve art is that, although the colors are strange, the values stay pretty realistic. For example, take Portrait of Madame Matisse (The Green Stripe) by Henri Matisse. There are interesting green areas all over the woman's face, and blue splotches in her hair. If, however, we convert the picture to gray-scale, it looks somewhat normal. If you can ignore the fact that you know the shading on her face is green. :P
This summer, I technically was in school. But realistically, I had the best summer vacation of, well, pretty much my whole life.
Wait... you were in school all Summer and had a great time?! What? Slow down there a sec... explain yourself immediately! Happy to. You see, I took an oil painting class over the Summer. Yep, real, legit painting with real, legit oil paints. So, I got grades and assignments, and credits for this class. It'll even go on my transcript. But at the same time, I had an awesome, fun, creative and low-stress time. The perfect vacation from Chemistry and Math, if you ask me. |
